Catena/Chain-Curve
Virginia Paquette

November 2007
(see press release)
(see artist's homepage)

In my art I have sought to depict motion, memory and contradiction. I am drawn to the sense of objects and space on the move, of color and shapes and lines in flux. . . I often work with images of movement, from natural forms and phenomena: rain, floods, “deluge,” the vortex and spill of moving water in defined spaces, whirlpools. This series is inspired by the beauty of the catenary curve, the curve a hanging chain assumes when supported at its ends and acted upon by gravity. “Catena” is the Italian word for “chain,” and it occurred to me that this curve appears frequently in the Classical Roman and Baroque architectural detail, painting and sculptural design that I love, and in the drape of chain around the neck and wrist.
Opening Reception: First Friday, November 2, 6-8 p.m.
Musical Guest: Bill Smith, internationally-known jazz clarinetist

Gregory Glynn, Sculpture & Drawing
October 2007
(see press release)
(see artist's homepage)

"My work is not inspired as much by nature itself, but rather the momentous and often unperceivable transformations in nature. I seek to evoke a sense of a world in flux and reveal a potency that dwells in living forms. It is through the process of creating my work and interacting with these forces that I find compelling relationships between the materials that I explore and phenomena of the natural world."

October-November 2004. FOREIGN BODIES, Bead Constructions and Paintings of Found Images from Italy. Virginia Paquette. The work in this show is based on "found" images and materials from Virginia and husband, jazz performer and composer Bill O. Smith’s, time living in Italy each year. The images, colors, and textures are interpreted from Rome’s rich history of art and architecture, and its contemporary politics and life. The works are gathered from the street - both visually and literally - using bits of "found" paper and cast-offs as a direct source for collage and painting, and sometimes juxtaposed to reflect the complex contradictions and influences of the past and present in contemporary life. The "bead constructions" are connected to this experience, and to the paintings, in a similar way, responding to everyday images and using found materials and elements from the color and remnants of Roman life. They take the shape of wearable jewelry constructions and applied beaded surfaces, and are each exhibited in connection with a painting/collage. Virginia’s husband, Bill Smith, performs in concert with her art. (see press release.)

September 2004. Wearable Art Jackets & Hidden Treasures. Rana Helmi. Rana Helmi, educated in Indonesia and Europe, has been designing textile fashions in her studio in Bali for the past two decades. Her collection incorporates a wonderful interplay of color and motif, reflecting the vivid colors of the Asian tropics and of Provence where she lived during her university years. The hand drawn batik incorporated in her designs comes from collaboration with Indonesian and American batik designers working in cottage industries in Indonesia. She does a limited number of pieces as she works on them directly. Each is a unique work of art. In addition to The Island Gallery, her fashion designs are sold to a devoted clientele in Indonesia, Singapore and Paris. (see press release.)
