An experienced quilter and dressmaker, Austrian-born Maggie Pavlou came to felting quite recently. She lives and works in Los Alamos, New Mexico, fusing silk and fine Merino wool to create reversible coats, jackets, vests, scarves and shawls that resemble gauzy collages, or landscapes, inspired by the Mojave and Sonora deserts. The openings and stitched ridges in her designs produce three-dimensional garments with a lightweight, flowing drape. Maggie rarely plans her designs in advance, preferring to let each one-of-a-kind piece evolve spontaneously.
