Comments from the artist:

The slab built bottle is among my newer work. I have just begun hand building in this last year as a way to explore forms not accessible with the wheel, and the results have encouraged me to do a lot more. Compared to the wheel, though, the slab building process is very time consuming, so I expect that this will continue to be a minority of my work. I stamp on my pots Sheng, meaning Life. I became interested in Chinese characters many years ago, and liked the idea of the ideogram of a flowering rice plant meaning "to live, to grow, to give birth to"; I give birth to these pots and feel like stamping Life on them is appropriate. If there are two stamps on any of my pots the other will be my initials.
