Another fascinating piece from Alan Vogel:  this is a dramatic cut through a cedar tree that he has burned and polished in the "shou sugi ban" style, the Japanese art of preserving and finishing wood using fire.  This technique originated in Japan in the 18th century as a method of waterproofing cedar siding, and involves charring a wood surface to render it a deep charcoal-black, as seen in the photo above.  It is currently greatly admired as a treatment for both contemporary exteriors and indoor furnishings, even to the extent of being considered a high art form.

Alan never disappoints in the category of modern art as he raises ordinary objects to the extraordinary by applying a variety of techniques to his own bold vision.  What a marvelous addition this clock will be to a contemporary home!

It attaches easily to the wall using two small screws.

48” high, 36” wide and about 6” deep.
